South Sudan ready to hold general elections on time – Dr Elia

The Minister of Cabinet Affairs has reiterated that South Sudan is capable and ready to hold the general elections on time.

Dr Martin Elia Lomoro announced this after President Salva Kiir held a meeting with the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Dr Annette Weber in Juba on Tuesday.

President Kiir and EU envoys discussed the preparation for the forthcoming general elections in December 2024.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Dr Weber called on the parties to the agreement to work together to maintain peace, and protect human rights.

EU envoy also urged the parties to prepare a conducive environment for inclusive general elections at the end of the transitional period.

Dr Weber further stressed the importance of empowering the National Electoral Commission to conduct free and fair general elections.

Meanwhile, President Kiir on Tuesday met the Head of the UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom.

During the meeting, the President assured Haysom of the government’s commitment to fully implement the agreement and prepare the country for the conduct of democratic elections set for December this year.

The UN top official said that the UN is ready to support South Sudan’s transition to democratic elections.

Dr. Elia reaffirmed that the government will deliver transparent, free, and inclusive elections to the people of South Sudan.
