The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has said that the international community supports South Sudan’s inclusion in a “new deal” for fragile states.
Addressing the media in Juba, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan, Toby Lanzer, said that the “new deal “ is a global agenda to help stabilize and move South Sudan out of fragility:
“Conversation has evolved around five issues: peace building and state building goals,” said Toby Lanzer, UN Humanitarian Coordinator for South Sudan. “This is the agenda of the New Deal.”
Fragile States are countries that believe that they cannot achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals by the year 2015.
Twenty countries – including South Sudan – fall into the category. Mr Lanzer said that goals such as stability in politics, justice, security, economic foundations, and basic services are important and that South Sudan had indicated that these are the “key priorities” for the country to make progress on peace building and state building goals.
In April the Government of South Sudan signed a statement of intent – or compact — to implement the “new deal” for fragile states.
“We would like to translate the compact into real action on the ground to make sure that this makes people’s life more peaceful, more stable, more prosperous, more just,” Mr Lanzer said.
South Sudan will celebrate the formalization of the compact on the 3rd of December.
The Prime Minister of East Timor, who is one of the main drivers of the “new deal” agenda, will witness the formalization of the compact agreement.
