S. Sudanese refugees in W. Kordofan call for protection from host community

More than 3,000 refugees are appealing to the Sudanese government to intervene in their relations with the host community in Western Kordofan State.

The South Sudanese nationals said there are existing tensions over the use of land and access to services in the area.

Last week, at least fifteen South Sudanese were killed in two separate incidents by suspected armed Misseriya men in Western Kordofan

According to a human rights activist based in Sudan, the killings happened in Al-Fullah and Al-Nohod areas.

A South Sudanese chief in Al-Nohod now says at least 3,900 refugees are without shelter following the attack.

Lino Ngor Dut told Eye Radio that they are also denied by the host community from burying their loved ones.

He appealed to the Sudanese government to relocate them to a different location where they can be protected.

“Currently, the host community in Al Nohod here told us that they don’t want South Sudanese here completely and even they said they don’t want us to bury our people here in this area. They went to the extent of beating us,” Ngor said.

“We sat with the [Sudanese] government to discuss this matter because now we are living under the sun with our kids and nobody cares about us.”

Ngor added that they are in talks with the UNHCR team regarding the general situation of South Sudanese refugees in the area.

Sudan hosts some 821,000 South Sudanese refugees, 61,000 of them are in West Kordofan.
