Rights activist detained in Mundri

A civil society activist has been arrested in Mundri West County over the recent fighting in the area, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization has announced.

Executive Director Edmond Yakani says they learnt of the arrest yesterday, nearly two weeks after detention. He says Krimy Dakas Krimy was working for Nurture Community Organization.

He has been accused of playing a role in the recent fighting in the county, in which several lives were lost and hundreds of families displaced.

Mr Yakani says they are concerned about the safety of the activist.

“He got missing and for the best of our knowledge from a reliable source, he has been arrested by military intelligence,” Mr Yakani told Eye Radio.

“We tried to reach our security committee in national parliament but I couldn’t access them but we are trying to reach to the chairperson for security committee at the national parliament.”

The clashes in the area were triggered by the killing of executive director, John Cleopa. 18 people; including five civilians were killed in the fighting.
