Relief aid movement to Upper Nile obstructed – UNOCHA

The UN office for the coordination of humanitarian Affairs says the movement of aid to Upper Nile from Ethiopia has been obstructed by the ongoing conflict in the country.

“We are concerned that the continued fighting and mobilization including by the white army is limiting the willingness of transporters to move much needed humanitarian assistance from the Gambella corridor into the north eastern Upper Nile state,” Sue Lautze, acting UN humanitarian Coordinator, told the press.

She said South Sudan says about 1.8 million people are likely to go hungry in the coming months.

Ms Lautze added that there is a need for urgent humanitarian intervention to avoid famine.

Yesterday, the International Organization for Migration told Eye Radio that thousands of people have sought refuge in Gambella Refugee Camp in Ethiopia.
