Reach lasting peace deal, avoid external interventions, leaders warned

An alliance of 18 political parties is urging the government and the SPLM in Opposition to reach a peace agreement to avoid external interventions.

They say that people should put pressure on the warring parties to end the conflict.

“We would like to caution the warring parties that they are engaged in a dangerous brinksmanship, our country is in the grips of war that threatens to destroy it by real threats of external intervention and division of the country,” said Mr Martin Aligo, a member of the Alliance.

The leaked AU commission of inquiry has recommended UN trusteeship should the warring parties fail to arrive at a lasting solution to the crisis.

“To avoid all these worst case scenarios,” Mr Aligo added, “our people must pressure the warring parties to put the interest of the country above their personal interests so as to give peace a chance.”

The parties include the SPLM for Democratic Change, the United Democratic Front, the Communist party and the Popular Congress.
