Passengers have raised concern over the rise in the transport fare for road trips from Juba to Nimule and from Juba to Yei.

Drivers say they raised the cost of transport due to the current shortage of fuel.

Passengers travelling from Juba to Nimule now have to pay 100 pounds instead of the previous 60 pounds. Passengers travelling to Yei also have to pay 80 pounds instead of 60 pounds.

:“It’s really expensive. There are people who cannot afford this fares and I am sure with Christmas they will increase it again because there is no fuel in the country. Those drivers should reduce these fares to allow people who have no money to travel to their families.”

Some drivers say they can only get fuel to buy in Nimule.

“We used to take people at 60 pounds. Now that there is no fuel, we have raised it to 80 pounds. Now a car coming from Nimule to Juba is 100 pounds. Passengers are there, but it is the problem of fuel. For us we get fuel only in Nimule.” A Driver said.

The Managing Director of the government oil firm, Nilepet, said last week that there were transport delays in Kenya, through which South Sudan imports fuel.
