President William Ruto met with former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete at State House, Nairobi, on Wednesday to discuss regional stability, with a specific focus on the ongoing peace process in South Sudan.

In a statement shared on his X account, President Ruto emphasized that continental security depends on a unified approach from all regional stakeholders. He noted that “silencing the guns” is a collective responsibility requiring consistent and long-term engagement.

The discussions highlighted the long-standing relationship between Kenya and its northern neighbor. President Ruto acknowledged the significant milestones South Sudan has reached over the past two decades, while reaffirming that Kenya remains a dedicated partner in the country’s journey toward lasting stability.

“South Sudan has made many strides since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 and attaining independence in 2011,” President Ruto stated. “Since then, Kenya and the region have walked with the people of South Sudan in their triumphs and challenges.”

As the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, Jakaya Kikwete’s visit underscores a renewed diplomatic push to address security concerns in the region. Both leaders agreed that achieving peace in South Sudan is vital for the economic and social integration of the East African community.
