President Salva Kiir’s office has called on South Sudanese citizens to remain calm and refrain from retaliation against Sudanese refugees as security forces try to disperse angry young people engaged in looting in Juba.

On Thursday evening, footages emerge of civilians vandalizing shops and matching the streets of Juba as police fired shots to disperse them.

Police and army officials have confirmed the incidents, reiterating that they would ensure protection of innocent people and their properties.

In a statement following the incident, President Kiir’s press secretary Lily Adhieu Martin said the Head of State encouraged citizens to shun violence against Sudanese traders seeking refuge in the country.

The statement said the government is “deeply distressed and saddened by the recent barbaric killings of innocent South Sudanese civilians” by Sudanese armed forces.

“Our citizens trapped in war zones in Sudan are entitled to protection under the Geneva Convention, which the warring parties are obligated to uphold,” it aadded.

The statement reiterated the president’s assurance that swift and decisive action is being taken in response to the events on Wad Madani.

It pointed out that since learning of the incidents, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Sudanese Ambassador to Juba, and diplomatic consultations are ongoing to ensure those responsible for the killings are held accountable.

“I urge all South Sudanese citizens to remain calm and refrain from retaliation.”

“It is crucial that we do not allow anger to cloud our judgment or turn against Sudanese traders and refugees currently residing in our country. These individuals are seeking safety, and it is our duty to offer protection and support to those in need.”

The statement called on South Sudanese to exercise restraint and allow the governments of South Sudan and Sudan to address this matter through diplomacy.

“Let us trust in the processes of peace and dialogue to resolve this crisis, rather than taking matters into our own hands.”
