President Salva Kiir has issued a stern directive to the leadership of Unity State and the Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA), tasking them with the immediate restoration of peace, law, and order in their respective jurisdictions.

During a meeting at the State House on Thursday, April 2, 2026, President Kiir addressed the Governor of Unity State, Dr. Joseph Monytuil Wejang, and the Chief Administrator of the Ruweng Administrative Area, Daniel Makuei Thieyear, as they prepare to assume their duties following their recent appointments.

The President emphasized that both leaders are being sent on a specific mission to stabilize the border regions and ensure that peace prevails between neighboring communities.

“You are going there for a mission. And that mission is to go and restore law and order for peace to prevail,” President Kiir told the two officials.

The Head of State further urged the leaders to remain focused on their mandate and cautioned them against listening to individuals or groups working to undermine the peace, unity, and stability of the people.

In a joint press briefing following the meeting, Governor Monytuil and Chief Administrator Makuei pledged to work in close coordination to address the persistent insecurity that has plagued the region in recent months. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to promoting cooperation and peaceful coexistence among their constituents.

The directive comes just one week after President Kiir reappointed Dr. Monytuil and Mr. Makuei to their respective positions.

The urgency of the President’s directive follows a violent incident in early March in Abiemnhom County, where more than 200 people, including local officials, were killed.

Authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area previously alleged that the attackers were armed youth from Mayom County in Unity State, highlighting the fragile security situation along the state borders.

The reappointment and subsequent briefing at State House are seen as a strategic move to de-escalate tensions and formalize a joint security approach between the two administrations.
