Police report shows improving countrywide security situation: Kassara

South Sudan National Police Service (SSNPS) reports a calm security situation countywide in the last four days, despite registering seven deaths in isolated incidents including that of a police officer who took his life in Juba.

Police spokesperson Col. John Kassara Koang Nhial said fatalities were registered during criminal offenses and social violence in Juba in Central Equatoria, Duk Padiet and Nasir in Jonglei, Gogrial East, Wunrok and Tonj North in Warrap, and Kapoeta in Eastern Equatoria.

Col. Kassara said police statistics indicate that crimes rate has dropped from Friday in comparison with the previous days.

“The general security situation has been relatively calm countywide for the last 3 days. The states and administrative areas registered offences mostly criminal cases and isolated offences that are related to social violence,” Kassara said.

“However, the rate of crimes dropped down today than the previous days crimes statistics.”

The police official’s suggestion of improving security situation comes after markets in several towns across the country were rocked by looting and vandalism over the incident in Sudan’s Al Jazira State.

– Incidents – 

January 21, 2025.

  • A police officer from the Directorate of Diplomatic Police Unit committed suicide by shooting himself to death inside Amaal Express Forex at Konyo-Konyo Market, the police official said. The motive behind the incident isn’t yet established by the police and a criminal case has been initiated at Central police division with investigation ongoing.
  • A 30-year-old man was shot dead by an unidentified armed criminal between Poktap and Pajun village of Duk Padiet county.
  • A 28-year-old man was cutting down a tree which “unfortunately” fell on a 10-year-old child’s head resulting in his death in Gol village of Gogrial East county. A criminal case was initiated at Gogrial East county police station, the suspect arrested and the investigation is going on.
  • A sectional fighting erupted between Atok clan and Lian clan in Abor-long village of Tonj North county resulting in the killing of two people with two others wounded. A criminal case was initiated and  reportedly investigation ongoing to determine cause of the conflict.
  • Eastern Equatoria State’s police managed to apprehend a 35-year-old male suspect in Torit who was accused of killing a medical doctor in Bentiu earlier in January 2025. The suspect was reportedly transported to Juba and later to Unity State for further legal processes.
  • A commercial vehicle driven by a 45-year-old 1st Lieutenant from police carrying his family from Torit to Nadapal through Kapoeta county was ambushed by unidentified armed road bandits who shot and injured the driver on his right leg in Hoss bridge of Tirrangore boma of Kiyala payam. The driver managed to proceed his journey to Kapoeta and a criminal case was opened in Kapoeta police station.

January 22, 2025

  • A Sergeant from SSPDF’s Engineering corps was found killed by unknown criminals and his body was taken by his unit for burial. The motive behind murder isn’t yet established by the police. A criminal case was initiated at Mangalla payam police station and the police is still pursuing the criminals and the investigation is going on.
  • An unidentified person was found injured by unidentified criminal alongside the road at Gudele residential area and the incident was reported to Gudele police division. The victim was taken to Juba Teaching Hospital for further medical attention and unfortunately he passed away within the hospital. A criminal case was initiated at Gudele police division and the investigation is going on.
  • A 45-year-old lady was assaulted to death by a 36-year-old male civilian in Maan-aguei village under Wunrok payam of Twic county. The motive behind the murder isn’t yet established by the police and the suspect who is arrested will be transported from Wunrok to Turalei. A criminal case is initiated in Twic county police station and the investigation is going on.

January 23, 2025

  • The White Army of Cieng Manyiel were celebrating a new song composed to them by an artist Gordon Koang in Nasir county. While celebrating, the armed youth started shooting live bullets on air randomly and the incident resulted into an injury of a Sergeant Major from SSPDF on his right leg inside SSPDF’S Garrison in Nasir county. There’s no criminal case initiated in Nasir county police division.
