Some police officers are using illegal receipts to collect money from road users, according to the Director of Traffic Police in Central Equatoria State.
Lt. Col Nichola Ater says the officers were transferred to the National Police Service, but carried with them the receipts of the state.
He said they are now collecting fees from road users for their personal benefits.
“They fine motorists for traffic offences and make them pay money but they don’t deposit that money at the administration office but they keep the money in their pockets,” Lt. Col Ater told Eye Radio.
He said those policemen will be arrested and taken to court once they are caught collecting the money.
“We are moving on the streets to look for those who are fining people illegally to arrest them and hold them accountable.”
Lt. Col Ater also told Eye Radio that the traffic police have not been efficient recently due to an ongoing transition.
He said the transition involves transfer of officers between the National Traffic Police department and Central Equatoria State.
