Police begins crackdown on unlicensed vehicles

The Director of the National Traffic Police has directed all those driving numberless vehicles to report for registration or face arrest.

General Samuel Ajuong Chuar says the police will start enforcing the directive this week.

The order comes days after President Salva Kiir instructed police officers to arrest anyone found driving a numberless car. The President says such cars are being used to commit crime.

Gen Ajuong told Eye Radio that the directive applies to all vehicles. He said any car that has no number-plate or license will be seized, including that of the Presidency – if found unregistered.

“People have to start going to registration places for licenses. Nobody is above the law. We will implement this over anybody,” said Gen Ajuong.

Gen Ajuong said the arrest will include vehicles belonging to the government, individuals and security organs.

The South Sudan Road Safety Act requires that; every vehicle is properly insured, driver possesses a driving permit/license and log book (at least a copy), and that the vehicle registration papers are available.

One of its disclaimer says; “Road safety is everybody’s responsibility starting with the pedestrians, motorcyclists, drivers and cyclists. On average of three lives are lost daily in road accidents on the Juba-Nimule road.”
