The People’s Liberal Party is urging the government to organize elections in states which are being administered by caretaker governors.
The party chairman, Peter Mayen, says people in those states should be allowed to exercise their democratic right of electing their own leaders.
He says appointing governors without the consent of citizens leads to insecurity, political crisis and lack of cooperation between the executives and the legislatures.
“It’s unacceptable, unconstitutional and undemocratic to have a care-taking government that should last for more than forty days,” Mr Mayen stated.
“So, if the government is a government of the people and minds about what the people want, this people deserve to have space rather than changing caretaker from time to time.”
The statement comes after President Salva Kiir relieved the former caretaker governor of Northern Bhar al-Ghazal State and appointed another caretaker.
Other states that have caretaker governors include Jonglei, Lakes and Unity. The national election commission has not commented on the issue.
