The Ministry of Petroleum has mourned the death of former Undersecretary Hon. Molana Mayen Wol Jong, describing him as a dedicated public servant and one of the pioneers who helped shape South Sudan’s petroleum sector.

In a condolence message issued on August 4, the Ministry’s Undersecretary, Santino Ayuel Longar Dau, expressed sympathy to Mayen’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who worked with him.

“The passing of Hon. Molana Mayen Wol Jong is one such moment. It is with profound sorrow, deep respect, and heartfelt sympathy that I pay tribute to a man whose life was defined by service, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the Republic of South Sudan,” Ayuel said.

Mayen served as Undersecretary of the Ministry of Petroleum for two terms and later worked as Senior Technical Advisor and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the South Sudan Geophysical Company under the Ministry.

The Ministry described him as a visionary leader whose contributions strengthened the institution and improved the welfare of its employees.

Ayuel said Mayen played a key role in advocating for the allocation of three percent of net oil revenue to the Ministry of Petroleum, a move he said improved the ministry’s operations and staff welfare.

“Hon. Mayen believed that the success of any institution depends on the well-being of its workforce,” Ayuel said.

He added that under Mayen’s leadership, ministry employees benefited from improved allowances, medical insurance, food support, dressing allowances, air tickets, Christmas bonuses and other welfare programmes.

The Ministry also credited the late former Undersecretary with championing the construction of the Ministry’s Twin Towers headquarters, describing it as part of his vision for building a modern and resilient institution.

Ayuel remembered Mayen as a humble and calm leader who was able to deliver results despite his quiet approach.

“He was known for his calmness, soft voice, and humble approach to everyone, yet he had a remarkable ability to get things done almost like magic. His quiet strength and efficiency earned him deep respect across the Ministry,” he said.

The Ministry said Mayen’s legacy in the petroleum sector and his contribution to nation-building would continue to inspire future generations.

“Though he has departed, his legacy of quiet strength, visionary leadership, and dedicated service will live on forever,” Ayuel said.

The Ministry extended condolences to the family and prayed for comfort and peace during the period of mourning.
