A legal administrator in Central Equatoria State has recommended further capacity building for law enforcement agencies and public prosecutors to avoid miscarriage of justice.

Sabri Wani, the head of Legal Administration in Central Equatoria believes the training can change officers and prosecutors’ attitude when dealing with crimes.

On Wednesday, about fifty investigators from different organized forces and prosecutors from the judiciary were trained in Juba.

The capacity building workshop aims to strengthen the justice system and the police.

It comes after the Acting Undersecretary in the Ministry of Justice criticized investigators and prosecutors early this week, for failing to provide enough evidence to prosecute serious crimes.

Biong Pieng said they allowed themselves to be led by witnesses, suspects, and complainants instead of taking charge of the legal procedures.

He called on investigators in the organized forces and public prosecutors to properly investigate both sides of serious crimes including sexual offences and the rising trend of money laundering.

“This training is to build the capacity of the law enforcement agencies and public prosecution attorneys by increasing their knowledge and number by also exchange the experience and also to change the attitude towards investigation and prosecution of the cases,” Wani told Eye Radio at the conclusion of the three-day workshop.

“Number 2, also the workshop was targeting to enlighten public prosecutors and law enforcement agencies about the trend in the issues of money laundering cases in the case of the legal framework, and the roles to be played by the law enforcement agencies while investigating money laundering cases.”

The training was facilitated by the Department of Rule of Law and Security of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan in partnership with Central Equatoria State’s Legal Administration.

Early this year, the United Nations reported that without tackling impunity, South Sudan will not stem persistent violence, and horrific human rights violations and abuses.
