The National Revenue Authority says it has collected a record 17 billion South Sudanese pounds in the month of December 2022 alone.
Dr. Patrick Kennedy Mugoya, the Director-General of NRA said in a tweet that the money was generated from Non-oil Revenue.
“I salute the gallant men and women currently working at NRA for committing to RTGoNU resolve to significantly improve non-oil revenue,” Mugoya tweeted.
“Dec 2022 gross collections of SSP 17.6 billion in aggregate represent the highest non-oil revenue performance ever.”
The NRA boss took to his social media again and tweeted that a “carrot-and-stick approach” will be implemented to motivate NRA staff.
“A highly competitive remuneration package for absorbed/recruited staff, on one hand, and an extremely strict staff code of conduct and ethics, on the other through a highly competitive remuneration package to his staff to avoid corruption,” he tweeted.
Mugoya, a Tanzanian national was appointed as head of the South Sudan National Revenue Authority (NRA) in 2020, replacing Dr. Olympio Attipoe, a Ghanaian national.
Upon his appointment, the NRA boss had promised reforms and accountability in the country’s tax system.
However, Mugoya had been at loggerhead with Custom commissioners over the implementation of an electronic tax system, primarily meant to enhance transparency.
The electronic tax system installed at Nimule border point to ease movement of imports and exports, has become a subject of blames for allegedly slowing down clearance of commercial vehicles.
Clearing agents at the Nimule point told Eye Radio on December 30, that more than 300 commercial trucks get stuck for days at the southern border.
