A national Non-Governmental Organization in Juba says it is empowering displaced women at the Mangateen IDPs camp to earn incomes in a bid to help them gain self-reliance and be free from some forms of Gender-Based Violence.

Messianic Jewish Aid Organization is currently offering skills on bed-sheets decoration, tailoring and saloon to needy women to help them become self-reliant.

Other interventions include the introduction of Village Saving Group where women will gather every week to deposit money to a cash box. Then open it once every year to distribute money.

Nyajima Mabila, GBV Officer at the organization said they have registered dozens of GBV cases in the camp.

Nyajima said that empowering women will enable them to create jobs for themselves and hence reduce rampant domestic violence.

She said the organization is also creating awareness among the locals on reproductive health-related issues.

“We need to make sure that we create more business skills, more ways that they are able to support themselves because one of the causes of GBV is the independence on men you know when someone depends on you, so it is one of the causes of GBV,” Nyajima said.

“So if they are able to support women by providing them with some business things or in one way or supporting them with cash, this is where you support them economically and they are able to use that money to open some business. It will also reduce the rate of GBV.”

As of this year, Messianic Jewish Aid Organization has documented over 20 cases of gender-based violence against Mangateen Women and Girls, Nyajima said.

This includes physical and emotional attacks.
