A South Sudan Media Authority official said community radio stations, especially Eye Radio have filled the information and communication gaps in the remoter parts of the country, where many people don’t have access to the media.
Sapana Abuyi, the institution’s General Manager of Media Compliance, made the remarks on Friday, March 15, 2024, during the fourth edition of Connect South Sudan – an initiative of the National Communication Authority.
He said many South Sudanese particularly in the rural areas are not yet connected to the information through the media.
“Many South Sudanese don’t have access to the media. If you look at the coverage and if you look at the ratio of population that has access to the media services,” said Abuyi.
“We have a minimum number because most of our people live in those rural areas which are not yet connected. Free-to-air services are the commonly accessible radio sets and mobile phones,” he said.
“The majority of people rely on as the source of their information free-to-air-radio services that they can access on their radio sets, the old mobile handsets are outstanding in rural areas.
“What do people do when the time comes for the news, you remove the sim card so that the news is not disrupted by any call that comes to you, then you follow the news especially the national news here in Juba and Eye Radio thank you for that.”
