A long-serving head of catechists in Nagero Nazareth Parish in Western Equatoria State has reportedly died after taking alcohol for almost three days without eating food.

Catechist Alfred Bagiworombia, 83, was found dead along the path between his home and the market.

Nagero Parish priest, Luka Yugue said a medical report showed that the deceased drank alcohol for three days without eating food.

According to Yugue, catechist Alfred has prepared the faithful to have matronly, Baptism, and confirmation for taking Holy Communion in Nagero parish for years.

Yugue explained to Eye-radio what happened in an exclusive interview on Thursday.

“The “Police, CID, and the rest of the team” took the body to the hospital and did three examinations. General check-up of the body, check-up on the stomach, and check-up on his tongue to find out whether he was poisoned but all three examinations turned out negative,” said Yugue.

“He was found to have taken alcohol for three days without eating food and that is what caused his death,” he said.

“Our late head of catechist, Alfred Bagiworombia is in his late stage of life, and he cannot persist in serious drinking of alcohol without eating. So that is the finding which has come from the hospital.”

Yugue also urges people who are involved in excessive consumption of alcohol to learn lessons from the death of the head catechist and refrain from it.

“I’d like to advise Christians in the Catholic Church that, what’s pleasing in the church is for our being and it is to make us live like human beings, it is to make us live like sons and daughters of God,” Nagero parish priest said.

“We need to open our hearts and receive the preaching, the word of God because, the church is the conscience of the society. The church speaks about people’s mistakes and reacts on behalf of the people,” he said.

“I’d advise the rest of the community that, the death of our catechist Alfred Bagiworombia, should be a lesson to all of us who are involved in excessive drinking.”
