The Ministry of Education has finalized the stages for the introduction of local languages in primary schools across the country, an official has said.
The five major languages, which include Dinka, Bari, Nuer, Zande, and Toposa, will be taught in lower classes, from primary one up to primary four.
The Director General for Local and Foreign Languages, Moses Mading, told Eye Radio that the policy is aimed at preservation of culture and unity among the diverse communities in South Sudan.
“When we start properly, the language will bring unity among the people because when Dinka or Nuer, who are here speak Bari, they can interact and know each other,” Mr Mading said.
“And when you find somebody speaking your language, there is peace.”
The new education policy on the languages is expected to be implemented in April 2017.
