An analyst from the UK’s Chatham house says there is going to be an active competition between the primary parties for key positions in the transitional government.
According to researcher Ahmed Suleiman, the position of the speaker is one of them.
Last week, the chairperson for information at the parliament, Oliver Mori, said the speaker would come from the ruling SPLM party, claiming that James Wani Igga has already stepped down for Dr. Riek Machar, an SPLM-IO.
However, an SPLM- IO nominee for the transitional parliament speakership Hennery Odwar argued that the position is opened to any Equatorian to be elected by a reconstituted parliament.
Ahmed Suleiman explains:
“The bringing together of the transitional government doesn’t cue the risks completely, despite some of the rhetoric, and despite some of the positive statements by both leaders including first and second vice presidents about coming together for reconciliations
But I think the idea is we have already moved into electoral cycle, and that competition for resources and positioning is part of that. So the importance of the speaker is quite Key.”
