Lasu residents need clean drinking water, ‘not food’

A community leader in Yei River County, Central Equatoria state says Lasu Payam residents are now drinking unsafe water from rivers and wells.

The area lacks clean drinking water sources. The Head Chief of the payam, Yoele Babanju says residents are at high risk of catching waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, typhoid, warms and cholera.

“We are tired of the issue of bore holes. We have told the Government to drill for us borehole but it has not been considered,” said Chief Babanju.

“We have also presented this issue to UNHCR working with us but they have not responded.

“We don’t want food, but we need water to help us.”

A hospital in the area has also been affected by lack of clean water, according to officials there.

County authorities say they are making ‘strategic planning’.

“We are undergoing a process of strategic planning,” said Bidali Cosmas, County Commissioner.

“In the area of water, of course even if our efforts are very limited, we are doing everything we can so that we can also see opportunities of how we can make use of existing efforts to continuously provide support in terms of provision of clean water.”
