Lakes detains at least 23 people over protests

At least 23 people have been detained by Lakes State police authorities in connection to last week protests in Yirol West County.

On Friday, the protest erupted after a meeting failed between the area MP, Honorable Deng Athorbei and the local population in Yirol.

“When the meeting failed and Athorbei boarded his car, the youth who slaughtered bulls for the meeting had started throwing the meat away, and immediately they attacked the commissioner’s office,” Lakes state Caretaker Governor, Matur Chut Dhuol, told Eye Radio.

“They broke all the windows and tore all the papers.

“They broke into the SPLM office and destroyed the windows; at that point, the security officers dispersed them.”

The state authorities detained those who were part of the brief protests.

They included; area administrators, some teachers, local chiefs, hospital staff and one soldier for questioning.

Governor Matur said the officials who were detained for questioning were later released.

He said those who will be implicated in the incident will be held accountable.
