Four people have been sentenced to three years in prison for drug smuggling, Lanya County officials said.

County Commissioner Huda Mika said the four were arrested by police, who found 100 kilos of marijuana in their vehicle. The group was arrested on the Yei-Morobo road, she said.

“We did not fine them because we know, if we do, they would pay the money,”

Mr. Mika told Eye Radio police believe most of the drugs brought into the county come via Uganda or DR Congo.

“As a result, we have put some check point where they are crossing,” she added.

Mr. Mika said that the authorities in the county have formed groups that conduct road patrols in search of drug dealers and drug users.
