Kiir to announce unified command structure on Monday

The unified command structure will be announced by the president on Monday, the Chairperson of the national transitional committee has said.

Tut Gatluak announced this at a joint security briefing at the SSPDF general headquarters, Bilpam on Friday.

He said after the command structure is formed, the graduation of the first batch of the necessary unified forces will take place.

However, he did not mention the exact date.

Tut, who is also the presidential advisor on security affairs, described the unified command structure deal as a milestone in the peace implementation.

He called on those who will take up the new roles, to put the interest of the people of South Sudan above their personal interests.

“The President shall issue an order for the command structure of the unified forces in the Republic of South Sudan, On Monday, we are going to be under one command, we are at peace and everyone will know his or her place,” Tut told a press conference at Bilpam.

“After completing the security institutions, we shall celebrate and congratulate one another. After that, everyone will go to his or her duty station and serve the people of South Sudan and work for peace.

“Moving from one place to another should now stop, if there is a problem somewhere, we will go there together to address it because we are going to have one army, one police, one national security, one police service and one fire brigade.

The peace parties reached the deal to end the stalemate over the command structure of the unified forces on Sunday.

The agreement was reached after the Sudanese mediation team headed by General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo submitted a proposal to end the deadlock on the critical part of the security arrangement.

On Wednesday, the SPLM-IO said it will submit the list of security officials slated for appointment in the unified command structure this week.
