Kiir signs the peace deal

President Salva Kiir has signed the Agreement on the Resolution of the current conflict. He signed at a ceremony attended by regional leaders in Juba this evening.

The leader of the SPLM in Opposition, Dr Riek Machar, and that of the Former Political Detainees, Mr Pagan Amum, signed the deal in Addis Ababa last week.

In a speech before the signing, the president expressed reservations that he described as serious.

These include the management of the negotiation process and some clauses on the security arrangements.

The president has called on the regional leaders to also join the warring parties in the implementation of the agreement.

“I want you, you regional leaders, to stand with us in the implementation; otherwise we may spoil it if it is left to us,” President Kiir said.

He also said some generals attacked Nhial Diu in Unity State against the spirit of the agreement.

“The commanders fighting in the field, what do they want to achieve? Or what do they want to show us? The message is very clear, that what we are doing here is not accepted by the other side,” he added.

The president circulated a document detailing the reservations he has on the agreement.
