President Salva Kiir has assured the African Union that South Sudan remains committed to holding elections later this year and continuing the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.
Kiir made the remarks during a meeting in Juba on Thursday with the African Union High Representative for the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea, Jakaya Kikwete.
The AU envoy’s visit is part of the African Union’s engagement with the transitional government on political and security issues, as well as preparations for elections scheduled for December 2026.
Speaking after the meeting, Kikwete said his visit was part of the African Union’s continued efforts to support peace and democratic transition in South Sudan.
He acknowledged that challenges remain in implementing the peace agreement but said significant progress has been made.
Kikwete added that consultations with political stakeholders, diplomats, international partners, and regional actors show growing support for elections as the way forward for South Sudan.
He reaffirmed the African Union’s commitment to supporting the country through the electoral process and the completion of outstanding transitional tasks.
For his part, President Kiir said preparations for the elections are progressing.
He said the National Elections Commission has already received resources to begin its work, including civic and voter education activities.
The President also revealed plans for an inter-party dialogue to build consensus on key electoral issues and promote inclusive participation in the process.
Kiir further said the security situation in most parts of the country remains stable and conducive for election preparations.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to dialogue and peaceful engagement with all South Sudanese.
