KCB strike declared illegal

The strike that has been staged by the national employees over pay rise is illegal, the Kenya Commercial Bank has said. It warned that those who fail to report will face disciplinary action.

The bank has asked the staff to return to work immediately.

The protest started on Monday after negotiations between the bank management and the workers hit a deadlock.

They argued that the bank managed to raise the pay for Kenyans who are employed as expatriates but refused to do the same with the national staff.

The Managing Director of KCB in South Sudan says the bank had offered to triple the salaries, which was rejected by the employees in demand for 600%.

“They have been given a pay rise of almost 300%, but they rejected it; they want 600%,” said Harun Kibogong.

Mr Kibogong said he has received an instruction from the ministry of labor, declaring the strike illegal.  He told Eye Radio that branches in Juba have resumed operations.

“We have just communicated to them this afternoon on the latest development. So I expect them to resume work,” he added.

The government devalued the pound in December, leading to a rise in market prices.

In January, the Council of Ministers tripled the pay for junior civil servants in response to what they called ‘market shock’. The pay rise will be effective this month.
