The Commissioner of Kajokeji County in Central Equatoria State says youth from Uganda’s Moyo District have raided more than 300 cattle after crossing into South Sudan on Tuesday.

According to Commissioner Wani Jackson Mule, the incident occurred in Abaya village of Kangapo One Payam.

He said local authorities contacted their counterparts in Moyo District after receiving a report about the raid.

Mule said the two sides later met to address the incident, resulting in the arrest of some of the youths and the recovery of 171 cattle.

“I received a report from our border with Moyo, in a place called Abaya, that between 45 and 60 youth from Moyo crossed into our side and raided about 300 cattle. I contacted the authorities in Moyo, and we managed to apprehend some of them and recover 171 cattle. The rest were not recovered,” he explained.

Commissioner Mule said an inspection of the area found no evidence that crops had been destroyed during the incident.

He said two local huts, known as tukuls, were also reportedly burned by unidentified individuals.

“Yesterday, when we visited the site, we found that no crops had been destroyed. There is a corridor where the animals usually pass near a garden before moving to a grazing area. There were also claims that one or two tukuls belonging to a Ugandan farmer were burned in retaliation, but we do not know who was responsible,” he said.
