The government has summoned the US Embassy Charge De Affaires for accusing it of violating the cessation of hostilities agreement in the recent clashes in Unity state.
On Wednesday, Mr. Michael Mc Carthy told Eye Radio that both the SPLA and the Opposition party have violated the cessation of hostilities.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry, which issued the summon today, said the government troops were defending themselves against attacks by the SPLA in Opposition.
“We are calling him to tell him that the government of South Sudan has been committed to the cessation of hostilities, and cannot violate cessation of hostilities, and that the position that our SPLA soldiers are in were attacked, and when we are attacked, then self-defense has to take place,” said Ambassador Mawien Makol, Spokesperson of the ministry.
“So, the US government cannot apportion the blame on both parties. We have not violated any cessation of hostilities. And we came to tell the Charge that our position has never changed, and will never change.”
The United Nations said in a statement that over 500 people were displaced as result of the fighting.
The US Embassy could not be reached for comments on the summon.
