Juba residents express concerns over rising market prices

Author : | Published: Monday, October 19, 2015

Some residents of Juba have say they are now struggling to support their families due to increasing market prices.

They say they cannot afford the cost of daily meals and other basic needs.

Some of them who spoke to Eye Radio have called on the government to intervene.

“This life is very difficult, you come to the market with fifty pounds, and this fifty will finish without paying for anything. Flour, charcoal, and the cassava are expensive. A bucket of cassava flour is 75 Pounds.

“If children do not eat well they will not study well”

Traders say they are raising prices due to shortage of the US dollars.

At the official rate, 100 US dollars is selling at about 300 pounds, but in the parallel market, it has now risen to about 1,700 pounds.

Many traders say they don’t access the US dollars at the official rate, although some get it through a government policy known as the Letters of Credit.
