The Juba City Council says it does not have enough public health officers to monitor hygiene and sanitation in markets and restaurants.
The Public Health Officer at the City Council, Susan Douad Jabara, says health officers have been outnumbered by the traders and restaurants.
There are increasing numbers of traders and restaurants in Juba, according to officials.
This has overwhelmed the health monitors.
She says the public health officers are essential in ensuring that those who sell food items on the streets and market commit to health regulations.
“Previously the number of officers and health monitors was enough to the number of residents or traders who sell food and they were few,” said Ms Jabara.
She said the city council will punish traders and owners of restaurants who don’t maintain good health standards.
