International community not in support of 2015 elections – NEC

The International Community is not ready to support a general election next year, the chairperson of South Sudan’s National Electoral Commission has said.

Dr. Abednego Akok says the government does not have enough money to fund the process.

However, the Council of Ministers passed a resolution this year stating the elections would be conducted in 2015.

Dr. Akok says the only way to ensure there is peace in the country is by casting ballots next year.

“I also met the president and I highlighted him that all the ambassadors and the international community should be engaged such that they support the elections,” Dr Akok said.

“Why should they support the election? The election is the only way forward for us to resolve our differences as we talk about peace, as we talk about reconciliation.”

Earlier this month, the spokesperson of the government’s delegation to the peace talks, Michael Makuei said if peace is attained, elections will follow a transitional period.
