7 people were killed and 9 others wounded yesterday in internal clashes between Rubkona and Guit Counties of Unity state.

State government officials called an emergency meeting to stop escalating tensions among civilians.

Officials say the dispute is between the Leek and Jikany communities over a contested area in Maderas.

Unity state deputy Governor, Mabeeck Lang said five adults and two children were killed in the clashes.

“We are putting measures to contain security situation as our obligation at this time,” said Mr. Lang, “so that there will be no further death in the areas between the two communities.”

“We have deployed forces in Chanlual, Yuanyang and also we have deployed forces in suspected corridor where the two communities can clash.

“We have also imposed night curfew in Rubkona and Bentiu from 8:30pm up to 7am; and we will go ahead with the measures until the situation is calm.”

Mister Lang called on people from the two Counties not to take the law into their own hands.

He also called on the national government to form a committee to demarcate the borders between the two counties of Guit and Rubkona.
