Information Commission’s official quits

The deputy chairperson of the Information Commission has resigned from his post.

Moses Wol Deng cited among other issues the fact that the commission operates within the Ministry of Information. He says this raises doubts on its neutrality.

He said the Information Commission was designed to verify and distinguish between public interest information, and information which is a threat to the security of the country.

Mr Wol says he cannot continue to work in an institution that cannot be perceived as independent.

“I have never been allocated any office where I could sit and do the government work. I cannot continue under such circumstances,” he told Eye Radio.

“The commission as an independent should have has established an office where it could receive the public complaint on the access to information, or denial to access to information but as per now, we do not have.”

Mr Wol also said that the Commission should be responsible for addressing issues of denial of private and public information to the public as required by the constitution.
