Hunger: No aid workers to distribute food in Mundri

There are no aid workers to distribute relief food to hungry people in Mundri where cases of starvation were reported recently, Amadi state governor has said.

According to humanitarian reports, more than 17,000 people fled their homes to safety following violence between an armed group and the SPLA in the area.

The JMEC earlier reported cases of people starving to death in Mundri.

Amadi state Governor Joseph Ngere says some humanitarian organizations, including the World Food Program have responded to the situation by delivering food assistance to the area.

However, Mr Ngere says the distribution of the food has not started yet because they are still waiting for officials from the agencies to monitor the process.

“You know dealing with relief groups; people who provide the relief aid want to be there to see how the food is distributed,” Mr Ngere told Dawn show.

It’s unclear why the humanitarian workers are not on the ground, but there have been several incidents of deadly clashes in the area.

Efforts to reach the WFP for a comment on the matter were not successful.
