Govt Sets up Independent Telecom Body

Moves are underway to set up an independent body to regulate telecommunications in the country, an official has said.

Currently, the ministry of telecommunications regulates activities of mobile telephone companies, internet services and radio and television channels.

The International Telecommunications Union, part of the United Nations, is in Juba to help establish a regulatory body which is separate from the Ministry of Telecommunications.

ITU is the body responsible in coordinating frequencies all over the world so that there will be no interference from country to country.”

Over the next three days, the Ministry and the International Telecommunications Union will discuss who should broadcast on which frequencies, private broadcasting stations and mobile phone operations, according to the Undersecretary in the Ministry of Telecommunication and Postal Service, Engineer Juma Stephen.
