The governor of Western Equatoria has referred the King of Azande to the Interior Ministry to claim its land from the state police.

The resolve followed last week’s meeting between the royal family and the state governor, Alfred Futuyo Karaba.

The area is where King Gbudue, the Kingdom’s founder, was buried after he was reportedly killed by some British officers while he was reportedly on a patrol in 1905.

According to a statement seen by Eye Radio, the Kingdom demanded the return of the historical site which is now the residence of the state police commissioner.

The call comes as the newly installed Kingship prepares to celebrate its first anniversary on February 9th this year.

Gibson Bullen Wande, an elder of the Azande Kingdom, told Eye Radio that the place belongs to the Kingdom.

“Before the death of King Gbudue in 1905, the King was staying where the tomb of the King is located. When the British came, they took over the administration during the Anglo-Egyptian leadership and started constructing buildings around the tomb but of course, the area belongs to the Kingdom,” said Bullen.

“In a peaceful way, the children of King Gbudue are asking if that area can be returned to them so they can be able to establish the administration of the Kingdom around that area.”

When contacted, the press officer in the office of the governor of Western Equatoria confirmed the meeting.

Alex Daniel Digi told Eye Radio that governor Futuyo told the Kingdom to write a letter to the ministry of the interior through his office for the release of the police commissioner from the residence.

However, Digi added that the governor expressed his willingness to offer state headquarters to the Kingdom and relocate his officer to Maridi to allow the Kingdom to operate freely.

This is, if the Kingdom is in a hurry.

“Last week, there was a meeting between the royal family of Azande Kingdom and the governor of Western Equatoria State Honorable Lt Gen. Alfred Futuyo Karaba,” Digi told Eye Radio on Monday.

“The discussion was all about the relocation of the Kingdom palace to be in the police commissioner’s residence which is near the governor state house,

“The Kingdom is going to write a letter to the ministry of the interior through the office of governor in Western Equatoria, regarding the place that they demand to be the palace for the Kingdom.”

The Azande Kingdom was restored on February 9th last year, and Atoroba Peni Rikhito Gbudue was installed as the King.
