The government has appealed for financial and technical support for transitional justice and reform priorities from the United Nations Human Rights Council during a session in Geneva.
Transitional justice is a key provision under Chapter Eight of the 2018 peace agreement, which aims to address human rights violations committed during the civil war between 2013 and 2018.
According to a statement issued on Saturday, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Dr. Wek Mamer Kuol, led a high-level delegation to the 62nd session of the Human Rights Council, where he outlined key areas requiring international assistance.
During the session, the minister presented a six-point report requesting support to address challenges facing the justice system in South Sudan.
The proposals include the establishment of transitional justice institutions to enhance implementation of the peace agreement, training of rule of law stakeholders, and legislative reforms.
The report received support from the African Group in the Human Rights Council, as well as Russia, China, Saudi Arabia, and other member states, who urged the Council to approve South Sudan’s request.
