Gender-based violence on the rise

Gender-based violence has become rampant all over the country, according to the Central Equatoria State Minister of Gender and Social Development.

Mary Apai says the highest levels have been recorded in the areas of the country affected by the conflict.

She was addressing the media during a hand-over ceremony yesterday in Juba Teaching Hospital.

The UN Population Fund was handing over fully constructed Counseling Center to the hospital.

“Rape has become a tool of war. Children are raped, women are raped, and girls are raped,” Ms Apai said.

The center will help rehabilitate the victims of Gender Base Violence.

“This center is very important for responding to victims or survivors of gender-based violence,” said Caroline Nyamemumbe, Gender Based Violence Specialist with UNFPA.

“It will enable survivors who come to Juba Teaching Hospital to receive clinical care as well as psychosocial support in the same place.”
