Fuel crisis blamed on lenient orders

The state oil firm, Nilepet says the fuel crisis is partly due to a failure to implement previous orders banning the sale of petrol and diesel in the black market.

For more than a week now, there has been no fuel at the refilling stations, while it is being sold expensively along the streets.

At the pump, a litter is sold at 22 pounds, but in the black market, the price is more than five times higher.

“We have the roles to play. I import it and distribute it to the service stations and it is the responsibility of other institutions to see into it that it doesn’t find a way to where it is being sold now,” Machar Achiek, Managing Director of Nilepet, argued.

He said the security should ensure that those peddling the fuel are arrested and taken to court.

“This is the responsibility of the police. It is the responsibility of the national security.”

Taxi drivers have also told Eye Radio that some refilling stations sell the fuel at night to certain individuals in jerry cans.

Police and national security officials have not been immediately available for a comment.
