Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. James Pitia Morgan departed Juba on Saturday for Luanda, Angola, where he will represent South Sudan at an African Union summit focused on conflict prevention and continental security.

Dr. Morgan joins over 10 African heads of state for the two-day gathering running August 29 to 30.

The meeting forms part of the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, convened by Angolan President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço in his role as the AU Champion for Peace and Reconciliation in Africa.

Delegates are meeting to review the continent’s political, legal, and financial systems for resolving disputes.

The African Union stated that leaders will evaluate existing crisis tools and work to agree on practical measures to improve emergency response capabilities. Talks focus on early warning systems, funding for African peace operations, the role of the Peace and Security Council, and response strategies for terrorism.

The Executive Council of ministers meets on August 29, leading into the main Heads of State and Government session on August 30. The summit takes place amid ongoing instability across the Sahel, Great Lakes region, Sudan, the Horn of Africa, and parts of southern Africa.
