Northern Bahr Al Gazal State government said on Sunday food commodity prices at local markets have stabilized following a successful harvest this season.
Information Minister William Anyuon said the price of sorghum and maize has drastically reduced making it affordable to consumers.
The official said the state, which was recently hit by a displacement crisis, is now free from hunger.
“The farms produces are out already, and people have harvested so there is no hunger. The market has stabilized and prices of food in the market have reduced due to the harvest,’ he said during a phone interview with Eye Radio from Aweil.
Anyuon however stated that other commercial goods imported from Uganda and Kenya through Juba are still expensive due to the transport barriers.
“But other food items that are coming from outside are very expensive which is due to the cost of transport from Juba, Uganda, and Kenya to Aweil that is why it increases.”
Northern Bar el Ghazal and other northern regions have experienced a dire humanitarian situation after the Sudan border which serves as a major trade route, was disrupted by the outbreak of civil war in Khartoum.
