A trader in Bor town of Jonglei State was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly took law into his own hands by shooting and killing a motorcyclist for having slapped a child who crossed his way, police said.

Jonglei Police Commissioner Major General Elia Costa said the perpetrator whom he refused to name was apprehended shortly after the incident.

The 20-year-old victim identified as Biar Ayuel passed away at 8:30 PM, said Costa.

“Yesterday (Saturday), we had an incident that happened here in Bor Town somebody shot a boda-boda raider, and he died at half past 8 PM,” Costa told Eye Radio in an interview from Bor.

The police commissioner said the culprit and other unspecified associates were promptly arrested and placed in police custody.

“We arrested the suspects, and they are in the police station for an investigation. He [deceased] is about 20 years old and his name is Biar Ayuel.”

He narrated that the murder happened when the deceased slapped a child for crossing a street in front of his speeding motorcycle.

According to the police chief, the trader who is understood to not be related to the boy, then went for his gun and fatally shot the motorcyclist.

“According to what we have got, the boda-boda was carrying somebody, then a small child came and crossed in front of the boda. Then boda rider stopped and slapped the child and told the child, ‘Why you are crossing in front of the boda to cause accident.”

“So, when he started to move, there was a shop nearby and when the child cried, the trader took his gun and shot the boda boda rider. He [the trader] is not the father of the child he is just a trader selling in the shop.”
