Fighting for women’s rights, not ‘punching’ men – Lawmaker

A young female lawmaker is urging women not to fight men, but rather cooperate with men to achieve their rights.

“We are not fighting the men. This is where we go wrong,’ said Yar Telar Deng a member of the national legislature Wednesday morning during the opening of a conference on the commemoration of International Women’s Rights Day.

The activity organized by South Sudan Youth Organization Coalition is supported by USAID’s Shejeh Salam initiative.

Addressing the audience, lawmaker Yar who is in her 30s urged women to change their mindset of fighting men to attain their rights.

“We tend to think that we are fighting men, no we are not fighting men we are fighting a patriarchal system that has been there for so long it is not a fight against men.”

“Let us hold their hands and see how we can actually work hand in hand with them to fight all the vices.”
