The European Commission has released 15 million Euros in aid to South Sudan to help combat the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the country.

It says the situation is extremely worrying.

In a statement, the EU says the funds will be used to address food insecurity, improvement of the health systems, and the protection of civilians.

“The EU stands with the people of South Sudan, who continue to suffer from a dire humanitarian situation. Despite serious restrictions on humanitarian access, the EU has been relentlessly assisting those in need,” said EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management, Christos Stylianides.

“It’s essential that humanitarian workers have full access to reach all areas to deliver lifesaving aid to South Sudanese people.”

The EU says despite signing the peace agreement, South Sudan is still faced with one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

It says the crisis has forced over 2 million people to flee their homes, and about 600, 000 others have sought refuge in the neighboring countries, with children accounting for more than half of the number.

The statement says more than 4 million people are suffering from hunger and severe levels of malnutrition.

The funding brings the total EU humanitarian aid for the country to nearly 300 million Euros.
