Equatorial Guinea’s government has resigned after failing to meet its performance targets, according to Vice-President Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue.

The Vice-President, who is also the son of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, said the Prime Minister submitted the resignation of the entire government after it achieved less than 10 percent of its objectives.

In a statement, the ruling Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea said President Obiang was dissatisfied with the government’s performance, accusing it of fostering corruption, misusing state resources, and failing to diversify the country’s economy.

The President also criticized the outgoing administration for failing to implement policies aimed at strengthening sectors such as agriculture and reducing the country’s dependence on imports.

A new government is expected to be appointed.

President Obiang, who has ruled the oil-rich Central African nation since 1979, is the world’s longest-serving head of state.

Despite significant oil and gas revenues, much of the country’s population continues to face poverty, while the economy has struggled in recent years due to declining oil production and demand.
