Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi secured an easy victory that earns him another six years in office after winning 86% of votes in the presidential elections just announced by the country’s electoral commission.

Al-Sisi’s landslide win announced on Monday afternoon, comes about because he faced no serious challengers, Reuters reported.

The head of National Election Authority, Counselor Hazem Badawy said in a press conference that al-Sisi received 39,702,451 votes countrywide.

“The voting percentage in these elections was the highest in the history of Egypt, reaching 66.8%, and there were no irregularities or violations that marred the electoral process, which won praise from local and international organizations,” Badawy said, according to Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper.

Four candidates ran during the 2024 presidential elections: President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, Abdel-Sanad Yamama, Hazem Omar, and Farid Zahran.

Egyptians started voting in the presidential elections from December 10, 11, and 12, 2023.

The election happened as the north African country grapples with economic crisis and a humanitarian crisis triggered by the wars in Sudan and Palestinian enclave of Gaza.

According to Reuters, some voters said the eruption of conflict in Gaza had encouraged them to vote for Sisi, who has long presented himself as a bulwark of stability in a volatile region – an argument that has also proved effective with Gulf and Western allies providing financial support to his government.
