The National Ministry of Education says payment of teachers’ salaries is a problem because the number of teachers in the country is not known.
Teachers in many parts of the country have complained that they are paid low salaries, and it is often delayed.
In an interview with Eye Radio, said knowing the number of teachers in the country will enable the ministry plan for them better.
“You cannot change or request the government to change the structure of the salaries of the teachers now if you don’t know how many teachers you have,” Dr. John Gai, Minister of Education, told Eye Radio.
“So, what we are planning in July, and this is going to be for one month completely, is a headcount of the teachers,” he said.
“To know how many teachers we have it means you have to send people to every County, every Payam of South Sudan.”
Dr. Gai said the headcount of all the teachers will begin with the regions of the country that are fairly peaceful.
“We will send people to go to every school, interview every teacher, who is trainable, who is un-trainable, their experiences, and their qualifications and take their pictures practically.”
He said the outcome of the headcount will also help the ministry offer training to teachers.
